Your first impressions are everything. When we go through life we are always discovering new things, people, products and services and making judgements. In  business, the first that a potential client gets to see is your logo design. Your identity gives an immediate interpretation of your business. So, designing an effective logo for your business is really important.

Several key elements are crucial when it comes to designing a unique logo for your company. First of all, you need to do some soul-searching business thinking. Do you have the resources or funds to employ the services of a professional logo designer or design agency? Whilst this person or company may be the answer to your problem, new businesses may not have the marketing funds available to go down this route. However, here are some key points to consider as you come up with your own logo design and branding.

Choosing your logotype.

You can simply choose from thousands of different fonts available to portray your business name. You can also choose to include an image to represent your business type – for example, you could include a graphic of a cake if you own a cake shop. Do not however merely base your logo on a generic stock image or symbol. This will stand out a mile away, and reflects on how others will perceive you and your business. It’ll do nothing to truly represent your business and eventually you’d need to redo it.

Getting your message across.

From the beginning you need to be very clear what your message is. Keep this message firmly in your mind when you are creating your logo and try to get it across in graphic form.

Make your logo aesthetically pleasing.

Your finished result should be iconic, clean, distinctive, and functional. Your logo should “work” when reproduced through any medium, in two colour as well as in colour.

Important ! avoid a generic look.

Don’t just use clip art, and come up with a boring, meaningless look. Be creative!

Be effective.

Don’t go over the top and create a masterpiece of design with deep colors using a rainbow spectrum. Remember that you are going to have to reproduce your logo in many different formats for print and web.

Make sure it is usable.

If you do not have a natural eye for design, talk to a design expert to get their advice. Will your logo translate into various different formats? For example, how will it look when reproduced on a shirt or on a letterhead?
