Blackfriars Bridge concept renders.

Project Brief

The brief was to produce a series of high quality renders to visualize an architectural design concept of Blackfriars Bridge in London. The design incorporates a steel and glass structure spanning between the railway bridge and the road bridge. The two current bridges would remain and the new bridge would be built on the existing supports.

The new bridge would be built with three levels and is accessible by two walkways for pedestrians. Features of the bridge include a waterfall with filtered river water pumped from the Thames. The main level includes a vast open beach with a pool running along one side. Twisted steel trees act as a support and run from the ground level through to the glass roof. A viewing gallery on the third floor shows views over the main glass roof and views over an impressive area of central London.

Perception/Tone/Guidelines

The renders show the design of the bridge in relation to the surrounding area in London. To help visualize the interior and exterior, images were needed to show form, structure and materials used.  These images were set with varying lighting rigs to show different times of the day.

The immediate surrounding city is basic in shape with only a white material applied. The bridge itself has Maya shaders and materials applied to give a high quality realistic finish.

Technical

The main 3d models were built in Autodesk Maya 2008 and rendered with MentalRay. Final images were produced from a  series of rendered layers and composited together in Photoshop CS3 to add dynamic effect.

Original bridge design and AutoCAD plans were supplied by the architect Hien Nguyen. The final 3d models were produced using a series of 2d plans.

Future Work

This project was the first architectural visualization project for the Logorunner team and is something we really enjoyed. We hope to expand on this and develop further projects.
